How to make your own word search

The Word Search Maker turns any list of words into a printable puzzle in seconds. Type your words one per line, give the puzzle a title, choose a grid size and a difficulty, and generate. You can print it straight away or save it as a PNG image to drop into a worksheet, newsletter, or slide. There is no sign-up and no watermark.

How it works

  1. Add an optional title, then type your words — one per line.
  2. Choose a grid size. Larger grids fit more and longer words.
  3. Pick a difficulty: Easy (left-to-right and top-to-bottom only), Medium (adds diagonals), or Hard (adds reversed words).
  4. Press Generate Puzzle. Not happy with the layout? Generate again for a new arrangement.
  5. Press Print, or Save PNG to use the image elsewhere.

Tips for a better puzzle

  • Match difficulty to the reader. Early readers do best on Easy, where every word reads the normal way. Save reversed words for confident readers.
  • Keep it to 10–15 words. That fills a grid nicely without becoming a slog.
  • Mix word lengths. A few short words give quick wins; a couple of long ones give a challenge.
  • Use the theme in the title. “Water Cycle Vocabulary” tells students what to look for and reinforces the lesson.
