How to give a spelling test online
Paste a word list and the Spelling Test Generator reads each word aloud using your browser’s built-in voice. The student types what they hear and gets graded instantly. Prefer paper? Print a clean test with a matching answer key. Ready-made lists cover K–1, Grades 2–3, Grades 4–5, Grades 6–8, SAT words, and commonly misspelled words.
How it works
- Pick a ready-made list or paste your own words, one per line.
- Choose a Voice rate (Slow, Normal, or Fast) and whether to shuffle the order.
- Press Start Test. Tap the speaker to hear each word — tap again to repeat — then type the spelling and press Submit.
- See the results at the end. Use Print Results, or Print Test + Key for a paper version.
Making spelling practice stick
- Practise in short bursts. Ten words a day beats forty words on Friday.
- Re-test only the misses. Make a new list of the words a student got wrong and repeat until they are all correct.
- Use Slow for new words. Hearing each sound clearly helps students map sounds to letters.
- Shuffle each time. It stops students memorising the list order instead of the spellings.
